criminal or civil liability
Is an ex-employee criminally liable for accepting and cashing payroll checks negligently sent to him (for about 9 months after he retired) by the company he once worked for? Is he civilly liable?

If they can prove you had knowledge that you had no legal entitlement to the money and took possession of it anyway, yes, both criminal and civil liability with follow. If you made any false representations in order to induce the payment, they can add fraud to the charge.
