Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
I would like to defend myself in court on assault charges.
Over memorial day weekend my girlfriend and I had been drinking and got into an argument late at night. I threatened her but did not injure her in any way. I left the house, she called the cops and they arrested me two or three hours later at a local motel. The cops have charged me with three counts of assault and one of resisting arrest. Two charges against the arresting cops and one assault charge against my girlfriend. They admit that no visible injury was witnessed. The charges of assault from the officers was from me bending over and asking for my shirt, again they admit not being harmed in any way. My girlfriend is a mean drunk, and she has since repented and feels very foolish for calling the cops. I have never been charged with anything criminal. She (my girlfriend) has tried to contact the courts to get this thing thrown out. She will not press charges and in fact will help me anyway she can. The assault charges made by the two police officers are ridiculous as well as the charge of resisting arrest. Can I defend myself? I dont have $1600.00 as one attorney wants.

Re: I would like to defend myself in court on assault charges.
It sounds like you may be in some serious trouble, given the extra assault charges and the resisting arrest. If your girlfriend doesn't want to prosecute, that's fine but Cops usually don't file assault charges for an assault against themselves unless they really mean it. That means they will probably be in court and wanting to prosecute.
I would recommend getting a lawyer, because they will know the various ways of either beating this case or making sure you don't go to jail. As far as money, $1600 is rather expensive and a lot more than my firm would charge for this case. If you would like to give me more information, I can help you analyze the case more and give you a more precise answer about your chances. You can email me if you want to provide more information.
