Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

destruction of mailboxes

My son and a couple of his friends were out the other night and hit up about five mailboxes. I don't think they totally destroyed them, but there was damage. What kind of punishment is he looking at? Is there anything he can do before his court date to resolve this issue so it doesn't have to go to court?

Re: destruction of mailboxes

Assuming the damage was less than $500, they are facing 60 days jail and a $500 fine on each count if they are adults. If they are juveniles, the system works differently. The best thing you can do is get an attorney to determine whether the State can even prove the charges, and then if necessary, get the money to pay for the damage.

He will have to go to court in some fashion. I presume he is a juvenile. Apologies to and restitution for each property damaged will go a long way towards mitigation, providing he does it (sincerely) before he is so ordered. Let him be the first to initiate - will put him ahead of the pack. Let me know if you need someone to navigate you through. Hopefully there is not more to the story.
