Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

am i a felon

I was charged in 1999 and again in 2005 with possession of cocaine in the state of maryland, both times it was a very small amount not specified but roughly half of a gram. The second time I was put on probation for one and a half years and was told by my probation officer I was not to have any weapons in my possession. I did and still do have my late fathers firearms in my possession and wonder if this is leagle and furthermore if I am elegible to purchase another firearm??

Re: am i a felon

If your probation officer previously informed you that you were not to have any firearms in your possession, that in and of itself strongly suggests that very likely you were convicted of at least one felony offense in Maryland, making you as a consequence ineligible to possess or purchase firearms, then as well as now.

And your apparent continuing violation of this ban,

would further suggest that you could possibly be rearrested as a felon in possession(of proscribed firearms), and prosecuted under applicable Maryland law, accordingly.

As a further note, there is no exception in these kinds of laws for firearms which the convicted felon may have inherited or which may be considered as family heirlooms of sorts.
