Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
We've all heard the stories: Someone goes on the internet and poses as someone they're not for sex talk. A friend of mine was doing this- no, really, a friend, not me -and when pressed for a picture sent a non-sexual picture of somebody else. The person he was chatting with apparently called him out on faking, claimed to know someone in the FBI, and that what he had done was technically a felony and identity theft. My friend at no time sent, solicited, or received any sexual pictures, did not try to get any kind of personal information that could be used in a fraud scheme, is a grown adult, and the person claiming to be attempting to get him in trouble claimed to be an adult. I feel my friend, while a complete dumbass and perhaps mildly ethically challenged, didn't do anything that could land him in signifigant legal trouble, much less get him charged with a felony. On the outside, if the person in the fake photo found out and wanted to sue, there could be something, but under the circumstances I feel like the guy's just trying to get even with him. Am I wrong? Is this a crime/something any law enforcement agency would/could act upon?
