Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
Midemeanor Petty Larceny
I have no prior criminal record. I was caught shoplifting in JC Penny and the items equaled up to $72. On the citation it says I am facing $500 fine/18 mos prison. I was given a citation to appear in court, but a date has not been given. What do you think my punishment will be.

Re: Midemeanor Petty Larceny
The punishment for theft under $300 varies greatly among the judges and courts of Maryland. Of no less concern than the punishment is that you may wind up with a criminal record, something that could make it difficult for you to obtain employment.
My suggestion is to contact an attorney to obtain appropriate advice. You are welcome to phone me if you have questions.

Petty Larceny
Shoplifting is a crime involving honesty. Of more concern to you is will this crime be on your record to follow you the rest of your life. You need to have a criminal lawyer, like myself, go to Court with you to insure you do not have a permanent criminal conviction.
