Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

pre trial?

I was charged with 613.00 theft at costco. I was given a pre trial date by the commisioner at the time of my release the day it happened. No bail was set and she told me to show up for this pre trial hearing and that I would be meeting another commisioner like her and I would not need an attorney for this. I am confused as to the point of this meeting and why would I not need an attorney present?

Re: pre trial?

The preliminary inquiry is to advise you of what you're charged with and tell you that you have a right to a lawyer and that if you can't afford a lawyer you can qualify for the public defender if you meet the standards for living below the poverty line.
