Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
Theft
August 2000 I was accused of a Attempted Theft in a store. I didn't know that they pressed charges until January of this year (because I wasn't arrested that night)when I got pulled over for a out tail light. My first question is why wasn't I made aware of this warrant. Second,I was told that I made too much to obtain a public defender but I don't think that I can afford a lawyer so what are my options. I also would like to know what my options are when I go to court? What are my chances at dropping it to a misdeamor? And what year was the amount between a misdeamor and a felony changed?

Re: Theft
Sounds like you had an open warrant when you were stopped. Someone filed for the warrant after you were "caught" at the site of the alleged shoplifting. There is something strange, because normally you are supposed to be charged on the spot. I don't know the circumstances so I won't comment. If you need more information, call 1800-924-6217.
