Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
Theft of service
A roomate of an ex-girlfriend is accusing me of running up her phone bill in excess of 1000-2000 dollars. She had a police officer call me to attempt to resolve it with full payment in teh next week or they would file criminal charges of ''theft of services''. The officer claims that because it is over 500 dollars that it is considered a felony. Just wanted to know my options and should i get representation. I just went through a bankrupcy and have been employeed for 1.5 months.

Re: Theft of service
If proven this is a felony of theft of service. If restitution is an option then it may be something that you want to do. However, you should be careful in that this does not appear to be formal charges and therefore a plea arrangement does not apply. I have a hard time understanding why the police are offering you this deal. Speak to an attorney.
Re: Theft of service
"Running up phone bill" and theft of service are not the same. One is civil and the other criminal. Talk to a lawyer. If you included her in your bankruptcy, that should be the end of the case. Talk to a criminal lawyer today.
