Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Will I ever be allowed to own a firearm again?

I was convicted of 'second degree assault' and 'unlawful wear, carry, transport of a handgun' in Maryland- both were categorized as misdemeanors. I was sentenced to 5 years, suspended all but 30 days, and 5 years probation. I am nearing the end of my probation now. Once my probation is over, will I be allowed to possess a hunting rifle or shotgun again? I am having trouble understanding the State and Federal Laws.

Re: Will I ever be allowed to own a firearm again?

If this is important to you, I suggest you retain an attorney for consultation services. Without knowing the specific details and accuracy of your facts, it would be imprudent for an attorney to give a specific answer to your inquiry and thereby place you at risk of a future charge.

The above words of caution are not to be under valued. Now, here is a general response. Misdemeanor charges generally do not invoke the loss of your Constitutional right to own and bear arms. But where fire arms charges lie, it is the specific offense that is the determining matter.

Your categorization of the charges and your conviction may not be correct and you should NOT rely on this information as being applicable to your circumstance.
