Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Maryland

Do you need probable cause to search a customers bag & receipt?

Do a retail store have the right to request that a customer show their receipt and inspect their bag before exiting the store without probable cause- particularily when their store does not check everyone's bag?

Thanks,

LJ

Generally, yes, because the store is private property and the management can take steps to protect its property. However, if you feel they have done so in a discriminatory manner - perhaps based on race or sex without good reason to do so (probable cause is a criminal standard, not the standard applied to shop owners), then you should complain to the store.

Good luck.
