Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
How can a 17 year old child get her social security benefits in her own name as oppsed to hers and her guardian? The 17 year old is a mother and she's trying to provide for her child and the guardian won't give her money to do so.

The child will likely need to petition the court for emancipation. Once the court grants the emancipation, the 17 year old is on her own and can file for social security. The 17 year old could also consult with a social security benefits attorney (usually such consultations are free) to discuss other ways to get the money.
Best of luck.*******The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.********
