Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Should I add my boyfriends name to my checking acct.
My boyfriend and I live together. I would like to add his name to my checking account, but I heard since he owes child support arrays (over $3,000) they would be able to freeze my checking acct and remove the funds (even mine) to pay for his child support. The child support order is in Ohio, not in Maryland and he would be depositing his paychecks into my account. Could this happen?

Don't do it--you're asking for trouble. Depending on how the account is set up, all funds in it might be subject to attachment. In addition, if you and the boyfriend have a falling out, what's to prevent him from emptying out the account on his way out the door?

If there is a judgment against your boyfriend for a child support arrearage and you add his name to your bank account, making it a joint account, the funds in it, including your own funds, could be taken to satisfy the judgment. You could have another potential problem situation which you probably don't think could possibly occur. You and your boyfriend could have a fight, break up, and he could beat you to the bank and clean out the account, and there would be no way you could how much of the money was yours. My strong advice is to keep your funds separate from those of your boyfriend.
