Re: Alamony

There is no minimum time requirement. Alimony determinations are based on many factors including the length of the marriage.

Re: Alamony

There is no specific law which sets a length of time before a person may have to pay alimony. In most divorces in Maryland nobody pays alimony. If one party asks the court to award it, the judge will consider how long the marriage lasted, the reasons for the divorce, the ability of each party to be self-supporting, and if one party has an income (or assets) greatly in excess of the other party, there may be an award of alimony because of the great financial difference. If one party has the ability to work and be self-supporting but chooses not to, it is very unlikely that he or she will be awarded alimony. If one party has custody of children and has a very low income, while the other party is very wealthy, and particlarly if the marriage ended because of bad behavior on the part of the wealthy party, there might be ssssignificant alimony even if the marriage did not last long.
