Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Alimony and taxes

My friend and his ex wife created a separation agreement based on alimony paid starting 1/01. The agreement was actually filed and accepted in October, 01. Can he deduct the full year's worth of alimony?

Like all deductible expenses, alimony is deductible in the year actually paid. So whatever amount your friend paid to his ex during '01 can be deducted on his return. It doesn't matter what his legal obligation was for the year, if he didn't actually pay it.
