Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Bill for the Baby
My girlfriend has been living in my house now for about a year, with a a couple month period that we were seperated. I have paid all the bills for the house and she has paid the few bills of her own. She was pregnant, then miscarried, then pregnant again, basically being pregant our entire relationship. she paid for her visits to the dr since i was paying all the other bills. our baby was born on sept 16th and i paid half of the 4500 hospital bill not covered by her insurance (Cobra) since i thought i was obligated to that at the least. a few days ago after the 30 days were up, she said she got another bill for around 20,000 dollars for the babies week stay in the NICU. she said she paid half and her well off gma paid the other half with her trust fund. she ensured me that her insurance would cover the baby for 30 days and now this. she wants me to pay her back, but i dont know if i should. we are not doing well and might split up. can she take me to court and if so what would she get? it seems odd to me that she got the bill and paid it the same day, shes always been secretive with bills and never shows me anything or asks for my help. what could happen with this? thanks.

Re: Bill for the Baby
She could take you to court to establish legally that you are the father via a dna test, then seek reimbursement for medical expenses and possibly child support until the child is 18. If you have medical coverage, you should see if you have coverage for these expenses.
