Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Name Change

I recently got married and am debating about changing my name to my current husband's name. Is it legal to keep the name I currently have on some things and change my name on other documents? My current name is my ex-spouse's name. I want to keep my current name because I have credit and business related concerns associated with using my current married name.

Re: Name Change

In Maryland you are only allowed to have one "legal" name. At the time of your marriage you may change it to your new husband's name. Otherwise to change your "legal" name you must petition the Court. In your personal life, as well as your business life, you may use any name you want, so long at it is not used to defraud anyone. If you did not change your name at the time of your marriage, your "legal" name would be that of your old husband.
