How can I check the state where someone got divorced and obtain a copy of the divorce decree to file for death benefits?

Divorce decrees are matters of public record. If the particular state has its records on line, like MD, you could go on the website and find the case, and then get in touch with the clerk's office to get a copy of the decree. If not, you would have to go to the courthouse in the county where the divorce was entered and look it up.
