I was denied an Order of Default what is my next step to obtain sole legal custody of my son

You didn't provide enough information to answer the question. Was the default denied because you didn't properly serve the other parent? If so, you will have to have the papers reissued and properly serve him/her under the rules. You will probably need a private process server. If the other parent was served and you have proof of service, you need to get a hearing scheduled so you can present evidence as to why you should be awarded sole legal custody.
