Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
child custody and support decision appeals
My child's mother and I recently went to court for custody of our son. The judge granted sole physical and legal custody to her as well as $496/mo. in support on a $20,000 a year income. I feel that the judge was totally bias and I want to appeal the decision, how do I go about this without a lawyer. By the way, the lawyer I had was of little to no use in the court room, therefore, I will not continue to use her services.

Re: child custody and support decision appeals
It isn't clear whether you want to appeal the decision regarding custody, or just the child support order. It is very difficult to successfully appeal a custody award, since the appellate courts defer to the judgment of the trial court unless there is some evidence of mis-interpretation of the law by the trial judge. Regarding child support, if your income is $20,000/year, or $1666/month, the child support ordered is consistent with the mandatory child support guidelines which the judge is required to apply. If your ex-wife were paying work-related child care costs, your contribution to those costs would make the support ordered significantly higher.
