Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Child neglect

I am a aunt of two children who live in a wreck of a home. Like, dirty dishes everywhere, trash in the kitchen but in bags, clothes everywhere. I was wanting to now if the parents do not change their living habits if I have any legal way of getting custody of the two children?

Re: Child neglect

I suggest you contact the local social services agency and ask them to investigate. If they determine that the health and welfare of the children is being endangered by the living conditions you describe, they will take action, which could include placement of the children in foster care. You could offer to act in that capacity. The parents would probably be given a chance to "clean up their act", and if they fail to do so, you might have a chance to obtain permanent custody. But you should understand that there is a strong preference in favor of the parents in these situations.
