Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Child Support

How can I get my arrears child support of $5,548.00 that has been dragging along for over 10 years? I need the money to pay back bill used to support my son in college and daughter in senior high school. What would the lawyer's fee be?

Re: Child Support

You need to go to court and file a contempt petition, in which you will ask the court to hold your ex in contempt for violating the child support order. You will also ask that the arrearage be reduced to a money judgment so you can try and collect it from his bank account or an attachment on his wages if he's employed. If your ex contests this he may raise a defense based on your failure to take action for such a long period of time. Given the amount of the arrearage if appears that he's made intermittent payments over the 10 years. As for an attorney's fee, most attorneys would charge you on an hourly basis for their services, but you can ask the court to order your ex to reimburse you for the legal fees in your court papers.
