First, how do you know if there is a case? I would contact Maryland judiciary case search to verify. I would attend and argue you have no official notice. Otherwise, an order may be granted against you based upon higher earnings than you actually earn and then you would have to appeal or file exceptions to the order due to lack of service. Please feel free to contact my office for more information at www.bsgfdlaw.com.
You should verify that the court record contains no proof of service of the court papers on you. These papers, which include a court summons if this is a new case, can be served either by certified mail or by a private process server. Court rules allow the service to be on anyone living with you who is old enough to be responsible to turn them over to you--let's say teen age and up. If there is an affidavit of service in the file, the court will go forward with the hearing out of your presence. If there is no proof of service, the case should be postponed to allow the petitioner to serve you.
