Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Child Support

The dependent child that we pay child support to will turn 18 years of age on 12/6/01. She had to repeat a grade in school so she will still be a high school student past the age of 18. Will we still have to continue child support payments past the age of 18 if she is still in high school? (It is a public school and no tuition is charged). Thank you.

Re: Child Support

The obligation to pay child support sometimes extends beyond the child's eighteenth birthday. A parent may have an obligation support an adult child who is disabled, or a child who lives in another state where the age of majority is later than the eighteenth birthday. Sometimes a judge may order a parent to pay child support past the age of majority, or a separation agreement may contain a provision for support until the child finishes college (or high school). In general, if there is no order indicating otherwise, the obligation to pay support ends when the child reaches majority.
