child support laws

I have a son and no legal custody agreement. I pay for everything he needs. Either I buy it or I reimburse his mother. will the state come after me for child suport?

If the mother is on public assistance, yes. Under the law, what you are doing now is considered to be a gift. If you want to protect yourself, you should consult with a family attorney about drawing up a child support agreement containing a specific amount of monthly support. If you don't have faith that the mother will use the funds for your child's benefit, the agreement can probably be crafted to overcome this concern.
