Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Child Support Obligations
I reside in the state of Mississippi and I am the father who has joint legal custody with my child's mother who resides in the state of Maryland. My child will graduate High School in May 2008 and will turn 18 years old in Sept 2008. My exsisting court order states that the sole physcial custody of my child belongs belongs to the mother. There are no mandates in the court order other than I'm to pay monthly payments for child support and as well as visitation rights. I am not allowed to claim her on taxes. The child's mother and I were never married. What are my obligations upon the childs graduation and when he turns 18 years of age? Currently, my child plans to attend college out of the state of Maryland. Will I have to get legal assistance to resolve this mattter. I have mailed child support payments monthly directly to the mother per court order.

Re: Child Support Obligations
You are obligated to support your child until her 18th birthday in September. You do not have any obligation to pay for college unless you made an agreement with the mother to do so. Since you make the payments directly, you need not worry about getting the order rescinded because of payroll deductions. I would just remind the mother when you send the last payment that under law you are no longer obligated to support the child and not to expect any more payments.
