Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Child Support Summons

A friend was served a summons from his girlfriend and is requesting child support...we are looking for any info on what he should take with him to CSEO and what will happen. He does not plan on having visitation with the child and is willing to sign over custody to her and when she marries soon letting her husband adopt the child. Also need to know any advise from someone that has been through this process...he has been paying child support straight to the mother and not through the state...she just filed for support a few months ago but he has been paying since the child was born...should the state know this?

Re: Child Support Summons

You describe a classic case where a non married father volunteers to pay support without first talking to an attorney on how to protect his rights. Don't depend on the new husband adopting the child. The natural father could be obligated to pay support until the child is 18 years old. Have your friend run, not walk, to discuss his case with a lawyer trained in Maryland child support. Your friend SHOULD NOT meet with the State before talking to this lawyer.
