Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Having a child out of wedlock

My son and future daughter-in-law are expecting. They haven't married yet and don't plan to until after the child is born later on this year. I would like to know what kind of problems will occur if they don't get married before the birth of their child? What kind of legal problems can they expect to run into in the State of Maryland?

Re: Having a child out of wedlock

They shouldn't have any legal problems unless they end up not marrying, or divorcing, and having a contest about the custody of the child. It is possible that the child, when he or she is old enough to notice such things, will have preferred that his/her parents were married at the time of his/her birth. And it would be wise to check soon about the parents' health insurance to be sure that it will cover the cost of the delivery and the baby's medical care.
