Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Out of Country Marriage

I will soon get married in the Bahamas. How do I register the marriage in Maryland and can I register my marriage at any time or is there a cut off date/ expiration? Also, for taxes 2006 is my marriage valid or will it be valid in 2007? Do I have too file married on my taxes? Thank you.

Re: Out of Country Marriage

If you want to, you can go to the circuit court of your county, to the marriage licensing office, and register your marriage there. You'll need your marriage certificate from the Bahamas. It's not required. You can ask the clerk to issue a certificate of foreign marriage.

You are eligible to file a joint return as a married couple for 2006. In almost all cases, you'll pay less taxes this way than if you file "married separate", which is your only other option. Check with your tax preparer for more details.
