defamation of character

My stepfather is going around or small town and has been doing so repeatedly saying that I am nothing but a whore and slut and going around giving VD to everyone. I live in a small town and just because he and my mother is divorcing he thinks it's okay to treat me like this things were a nightmare at home when I was a child and now that I have been very ill I refuse to take this anymore adventually I will return to work in the publics eyes as an insurance debit collector What will this look like for me? How can I scare this person into

stopping.

Your father-in-law's actions constitute slander and you could sue him, but the real question is how much could you collect if you won? Unless he is wealthy or has substantial assets, it's unlikely you'd recover much. An attorney would be reluctant to handle such a case without being paid for his or her services.
