Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Defending oneself w/o representation, child support modifications

I need to defend myself due to lack of funds for a contempt of court hearing on 25 Mar. My ex-wife wants to have me locked up for failure to pay child support. I need to know how to question witnesses, how to submit evidence, and stay out of jail.

I was unemployed for six months last year since my last hearing back in February of 1997. I have lots of supporting evidence to show I had no income, I lost my residence, received food from the food bank, and also could not see my children due to lack of funds and transportation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This will take place in Montgomery Country, Maryland.

Thank You...

Support After Being Unemployed

You should be prepared to show the court your circumstances have changes. However, I suggest that you file a petition to modify the order based upon your circumstances. I do not believe that the Judge will throw you in jail. Are you entitled to free legal counsel? Please check as I am not an attorney in your juridiction. Just be prepared to document that you are out of work and I think you will be fine. However, I suggest that a modication of the original order should be made. However, there are not enough facts that you have explained in your question to fully evaluate your matter.
