is a divorce needed
my girl friend has been w/me for
twelve years & our son is almost 9
he x-husband used to beat her &
they have been apart for about 13
years...if a divorce is need how long would it take.

If she ever wants to get married, a divorce is needed. The time it will take depends on the custody and property (if any) issues. In addition, each jurisdiction will have a time frame that they follow unless it is completely uncontested.

If the divorce is uncontested, both a complaint and answer can be filed together. Depending on the county, an uncontested hearing could be scheduled in a few weeks. If the case would be contested, it could take many months.
