If you have custody of your children the noncustodial parent is obligated to support them in accordance with his income and yours. MD law uses a guideline table to determine the basic support amount, and additional amounts can be added on for daycare and uninsured medical expenses. The support obligation continues in most cases until a child reaches 18 or finishes high school. If the other parent refuses to pay voluntarily, you will have to file a court petition. If you are receiving public benefits for the children, the county office of child support enforcement will go after the other parent to recoup those benefits.
