Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Father seeking custody

In 2005 the mother of my son was awarded custody. Since that time, she has failed numerous drug test, been evicted from 6 different places. Been arrested more time than I can count. Child protective service has been called by family, friends. In the last year CPS has taken the kids 2. The most recent being 2 wks ago. Because she was evicted from her appt. and they went in and said the living arrangements were filty, and they found her drug paraphanalia. I have temp. custody and her other kids are in sheltor care, until she can provide stable living arrangements, and then the judge will decide to give them back or not. She is not to be around them until then. I have filed a petition to modify custody, to gain full custody of my son. I have been in no trouble in 10 yrs, I have a stable job, stable living enviroment, and a wife who thinks the world of my son. The only thing I dont have is a Lawyer. I do not have the kind of money they want. Do I have a shot at going at this alone? Are there any kind of Fathers groups that could help? Do lawyers in my area work pro bono cases? She was served the custody papers today, by her OWN mother who is trying to help ME out. Who wants her grandkids out of her care. But I am running out of time!

Re: Father seeking custody

You can contact your local pro bono organization to see if you qualify -- contact your local court clerk to get that information. If you need help finding them, feel free to give me a call.

Re: Father seeking custody

There are fathers' groups out there--I suggest you google "fathers rights/custody" or a similar search phrase and you should come up with something in this area. As for lawyers, you are probably not eligible for pro bono assistance since you have a steady job, but you may be eligible for a reduced fee attorney through your local county bar association.
