Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

My friend has his and his father's name on his car. They had an argument and are no longer speaking to each other. The tags on the car are now expired and my friend needs his father to help get them renewed. He is trying to get the car put in his name only, but his father still refuses to talk to him and now he is facing heavy fines for outdated tags. How can he get the car changed over to his name if his father will not cooperate?

Tags can be renewed on line these days by any owner of record, so the father's cooperation wasn't needed for that, although it may not be possible to do it this way now since the tags are expired. As far as getting the father's name off the title, the only practical way to do that is with the father's cooperation--he would have to sign the title over to your friend. If the father is on the hook for a car loan that your friend is supposed to be paying, your friend might try to pay it off in order to mollify the father. There is a legal procedure called a partition action which almost always involves titles to real estate, but this would be an expensive and impractical way of trying to change the title.
