Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

My girlfriend has student loans from her daughters college education. If we get married, will I be responsible for the debt as well? What would happen in the event that something would happen to her? Would I be responsible for the debt?

You will probably not be liable for the college loans, since the debt was incurred prior to your marriage. If something happens to your wife, the debtor can sue her estate for the money and in all likelihood the debt collectors will go after her daughters, since they are probably the debtor on the loan (with Mom being the co-signer). You would likely not be responsible for the debt, but you should absolutely consult with a Maryland family law attorney about the specifics of yours and your wife's finances before getting married. Of course, you avoid the risk altogether if you don't marry.

Best of luck.*****The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege*******
