Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Guardianship of my foreign brother-in-law

My husband and I want to obtain guardianship of his brother. My husband is a US Citizen, his brother is 20 yrs old and here on a tourist visa. He came to visit and then decided he wants to live with us (yes his parents agreed to this, but they are in another country). How can we obtain guardianship of him so that he will be eligible for the benefits we can offer him (residency, health insurance, etc). We are located in MD and would like to do this without hiring an attorney if possible.

Your brother in law is an adult and unless mentally incompetent (which I assume he's not from your query) is not eligible for guardianship. You may be able to sponsor him for a resident visa but should contact an immigration lawyer to discuss that. As for health benefits, if he becomes a legal resident he may be entitled to coverage under a family policy depending upon the terms of your coverage.
