Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

High School Tuition

My wife and I are seperated for approx. 10 months. My oldest son ( age 15 ) is attending a private High School tha t costs $11,000/yr. Do I have to contribute to this? It was my ex wife and her family that wanted him to attend there. I did not not because of the financial commitment. This tuition is really putting a burden on my finances. I am living pay check to pay check and have next to nothing left over at the end of the month. My son is on academic probation and shows no concern for this. He is not making any effort and my wife said at the beginning of last school year she was not going to pay for failing grades. Now she has changed her way and insists that I keep paying the $ 525.00/mo for this.

Unless it is stipulated in a written separation agreement that you will continue to pay tuition, I would argue that you don't have to. Since it is now summer, its good time to communicate to your wife that she should make plans to register your son in public school. You should also be mindful of any other child support obligations you may have as a result of the pending divorce.
