Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Hello. My husband and I have been married 18 years. We split our household expenses, albeit unequally. We are now ready to move to a new house that we had begun building last May. Prior to moving in, we have discussed the cost split etc. However, my husband wants me to sign a written agreement regarding my share of the payment, the monthly household expenses I incur, etc. I have some reservations about signing this and have the following questions:
1. Is an agreement between a husband and wife (married for 19 years) valid in court and and laws related to this governed by the State of Maryland?
2. What is the legal binding of this agreeement and can he take me to court if I dont pay my share, etc?
3. I run a small business and like anything else, it has its ups and downs. By signing this agreement, am I setting myself to be sued in case I cannot make payments due to illness, accidents, etc?
I offered to write up a mou between us instead of an agreement. Ideally I would like to discuss this verbally but he insists on having things in writing to move forward.
Any advise on this would be very helpful in terms of my legal responsibilities, particularly long term.
Thanks very much.

Such an agreement may have unintended consequences. You should have an attorney review the agreement based on your objectives. If you are getting divorced then such an agreement would be enforceable. Call me to discuss.
