With respect to the knife, you can go to your local MD District Court or the commissioner's office at a police station and file a petition for a civil protection order. If issued, the sheriff or police will immediately remove your wife from the premises pending a hearing before a judge in about a week. If at that hearing the judge finds that you have established a reasonable basis for a need for protection, he or she can order her to stay away from the premises and also away from you in general (work, etc) for a period of up to a year. As for the checks, there isn't anything the police can do before she actually commits an act of forgery, but you can protect yourself by removing your funds from any account where she might have access to checks and opening a new account in your name. Then you will have to be sure she doesn't find out your new account # or gain access to your new checks.
You have several choices. You can leave and start separation for divorce. You can stay and risk another "issue" that may not be the same outcome as the last round. You can seek a protective order which can be renewed; however, you should speak with an attorney. As to forgery of the checks, you have several elements to prove. Call me to discuss.
