Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Marriage

I am 50 years old and financially secure and am contemplating a second marriage. My fiance is not financially secure, is paying off a tax bill and has bad credit. He has no savings, 401k, etc. I have everything in my name and he contributes to pay it, e.g. mortgage, credit card. I am concerned that if we marry I will be responsible for his lack of responsibility in the past years. Would it be wise to consult someone about these concerns?

Thank you

Re: Marriage

You will not become responsible for his past debts by marrying him. However, if you commingle your assets, bank accouts, etc., you may be exposing those assets at least to the tax delinquency.

You would be wise to consult an attorney for the preparation of a prenuptial agreement. This is a very useful document for people in your situation. You can protect your pre-marriage assets in case things don't work out, or if you want to leave your property to your children. I'd be happy to assist you with this.
