Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
I have been married for 12 years and I am seeking a divorce. I commited adultry, what am I going to lose when we go to court? We have 2 kids together, a house. I do not work. We are going to try a 6 month separation period, do we need to get a lawyer to do this or can we type up an agreement and we each sign it and notarize it? What does mediation mean?

Who is responsible for the grounds for divorce -- who was "at fault" -- is one of many considerations courts use when determining issues such as alimony. It's not always a significant issue though under the circumstances it may be. I.e., it would be ironic that the one who committed adultery would request alimony due to not working. This may or may not be an issue for you.
On the issue of separation, you can certainly enter into an agreement on your own but you probably at least should have an experienced family law attorney review the agreement before you sign it to see if you're waiving some important right.
Mediation is an out of court procedure where the parties meet with a neutral expert trained in helping people resolve disputes, the purpose of which is to reach a fair settlement without things turning ugly in court.
