Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Minor child name change

I've been married for almost 7 years. I'd like to change my 8 yr. old's name to match that of our other children. She's never known her birth father and his name is not on the birth certificate. How easy / hard will it be to change her name without involving the absentee birth parent? Will I still have to find him and obtain his consent?

This page at the MD Judiciary web site should explain the process:

You will need consent of any parents, guardians and custodians. The father may not be listed on the birth certificate, but obviously there is one. If the father is unknown or his whereabouts are unknown, you can try to locate him through publication. Presumably, he won't respond, and then you can proceed without his consent.

Download the minor's packet at the URL above -- it should explain what's involved.
