Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

How do I obtain temporary or permanent custody of a 1 year old child that has been placed in my custody by the mother for the last year. The mother has been incarcerated and is not able to care for the child. Family members have threatened to take the child from my home. Please tell me my rights.

The best way would be to try and get the mother to give you temporary guardianship of the child. If she agrees to this, this can be done by having an attorney draw up the appropriate guardianship document and then taking the paper to the prison for her to sign. If she is not willing to do this, you will have to file a court petition, which can be contested by the family.
