Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Obtaining my personal property after divorce

My divorce was final just two weeks ago and I would like to get the rest of my belongings from the ''family home''. We have been civil during the process of divorce and she has known that I want to get these last things. Which are family antiques, furniture, coin collections, tools, fishing gear and pictures from my Mother & Father which are deceased. All of which I brought into our family or belonged to my family. However when I spoke to her this week, she is upset that I'm involved with someone now and said she doesn't want me on her property. She suggessted a friend of ours to come and get my things. I don't think this is fair and wish to be there to obtain my own belongings. What should I do? I thought that I should call the city police and suggest they be there, while I get my things, to ward off a domestic situation that could get out of hand. She's a very difficult person to work with, hence the divorce. Please help...

Re: Obtaining my personal property after divorce

In order to avoid a domestic situation, I would advise that you either go with a friend or better yet send a friend over with an inventory of your items. If your wife can have the items ready for pick up, that would be helpful. Given the emotions surrounding this small issue, it makes no sense to escalate the matter.

Prior notice of your intention to obtain your property is recommended. It may be beneficial to prepare an inventory of the items beforehand. You may want to bring an independent witness. Contact an attorney should you require legal assistance. G. Joseph Holthaus III (410) 750-2567
