Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Paying Child Support
I have 3 kids and pay court ordered support for 2 of them, and can't afford to live. The other case is about to go through courts as well for support. Not all cases are in MD. When I tried to have it modified, it actually went up 20 dollars. I really can't afford an attorney but desperately need some changes. I'm not trying to get out of my obligations, but trying to get them lowered in order for me to be able to make it. They want me to support them but they wanna take all my money plus some

Re: Paying Child Support
The amount of child support you are obligated to pay is essentially determined by the child support guidelines that are part of the child support law. For children in other states, those states' laws would apply. In MD, your pre-tax income, combined with that of the mother, determines the basic support level to which the children are entitled. Added to that are expenses such as child care and unreimbursed medical expenses. Each parent must provide support based upon the percentage of the combined income he/she earns. If either parent's income changes, a petition to change the amount of support that reflects such a change can be filed. I suggest you go through the bar association in your county and schedule an appointment with a family law attorney who can go over your individual situation in detail.
