Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Question of dog ownership in break up
I and my boyfriend have lived together for 3 years (NOT MARRIED) We share all bills half and half. I recently have decided I want to end it due to the abuse he gives me. What I want to know is the dog that was purchased during our time together would belong to which one of us?
The dog is titled in my name... It has a micro chip embedded in my name.... I pay for the vet bills, etc.
So is the dog legally mine? I am just asking to make sure since the law can be funny in these matters and knowing my ex-boyfriend he will do anything to get back at me to make me regret breaking up. So, is the dog legally mine no matter what.....THANKS

Re: Question of dog ownership in break up
You would seem to have the stronger claim based on the facts you presented. You didn't indicate whose money was used to initially purchase the dog, nor what your intent was when you acquired it. Obviously things were better between the two of you at that time, and if you treated it as a joint purchase, he would have some arguable claim to partial ownership. As a practical matter, would he take you to court if you retained possession of the dog?
