Re: Receiving an inheritance

Ordinarily, inheritances and gifts are not marital property. Giving or devising the house to your son will not automatically give your daughter-in-law any interest in it. However, over time, non-marital property can be re-characterized through certain actions. For example, they could take out an equity line in the house and buy marital property with it. Or they could sell the home and use its proceeds to buy another home, commingling marital and non-martial property to a point it would be very difficult to untangle. Also, your son could simply give his wife an interest in the house.

Estate planning attorneys may be able to help come up with a plan to achieve your goal.
