Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
After a relationship breakup, what are you entitled to keep or get back?
My boyfriend of 3 years recently broke up with me. After 2 months, he is not speaking to me. During our relationship, I gave him many gifts with the intent that we would have a lasting relationship. One of which, is a computer, worth a good ammount. Usually after a breakup, I hear couples return items to each other, gifts or not. However, my ex refuses to return certain items to me, including the computer. I would gladly return anything he asks for, including an expensive piece of jewelry he gave me. Is there anything I can do legally, to get back my stuff? Thanks.

Sorry-unless otherwise stated at the time a gift is tendered, it's considered to be unconditional, unless procured by fraud or deceit. The fact that your relationship ended doesn't qualify as that.

A gift is a gift. This means that you gave the value of the consideration without any expectation in return. Essentially the gifts given between you two are free and clear of any claim of the other. Depending on how the items were purchased, paid or financed as well as titled may alter the outcome. Good luck.
