Re:leagl marriage

1995 I married someone before my divorce became final in 1996. That person is missing( running from the law) since 1997. I would like to marry someone now. Was that legal? Do I have to obtain divorce. I do not have much money. I once asked a lawyer and he said it was ok to marry because divorce wasn't final

Your '95 marriage was illegal, so you are free to marry now, since you were never married to the fugitive.
